Trampolines are a fun activity for people of all ages to enjoy. It is a way to get the whole family outdoors goofing around. In addition, a trampoline provides each person with exercise without them even realizing it. However, trampoline safety is something that anyone who owns one needs to be responsible about.

It is never a good idea to allow children to use a trampoline without an adult present. If you have other children that frequently come to your home, make sure their parents don’t mind if they use the trampoline.

To help prevent accidents from someone bouncing off the trampoline, it is a good idea to get a safety net. They are made for any shape or size or trampoline you can purchase. Another good idea is to dig holes deep in the ground. You can then set the trampoline into the ground. You will still get the same bouncing effects, but the entire piece of equipment may only be a foot from the ground.

Make sure your trampoline is safely away from power lines, fences, trees, and any other item that could lead to injuries. You need a clearance of 10 feet all the way around the trampoline and 20 feet in the air. You need to routinely check the trampoline for broken or stressed springs and hooks.

The more people on a trampoline at one time, the more likely accidents are to occur. This is because the bouncing of each person affects the others. There is also a great risk of being hit by someone else who also has no control over their movements. Never allow anyone who has been consuming drugs or alcohol to use a trampoline. Even prescription drugs can alter one’s perception.

Make sure anyone attempting to perform tricks on a trampoline knows the proper way to do them. Attempting various flips and tricks can lead to injuries. Another common cause of injuries on trampolines is due to various sports. One common sport is basketball. A basketball hoop is placed at both ends of the trampoline. The teams then play the game as usually, but with a twist as to the terrain they are playing on.

While enjoying a trampoline is encouraged, accidents do happen. Trampoline safety needs to always be a priority. More than 75,000 people are seen for medical treatment each year due to trampoline injuries. They include sprained ankles and wrists, broken bones, missing teeth, head injuries, and even death.Similar Posts:

Buying a swing set for your child is a wonderful addition to your outdoor play yard. You will find that owning a swing set provides entertaining fun, healthy exercise, and hours of enjoyment for your child. Whether you have one child or several, there are some things to consider before purchasing a swing set to ensure that your new addition will be safe as well as fun.

Wooden or metal swing set?

The first thing to consider is whether you will purchase a wooden or metal swing set. Both are very popular and you will most likely choose your type of swing set based upon personal preference and location. For instance, those who live in hot climates may prefer wooden swing sets due to the fact that they don’t retain as much heat as metal swings.

Preparing the ground

However, regardless if you prefer wooden or metal, you will find that you need to prepare a level ground in your backyard to ensure that the swing set is stable. You should also take into consideration the fact that your children will most definitely fall off of the swing set therefore, when preparing the ground, keep in mind that the area is a place where your children may fall. Because of this risk factor, many parents opt to install shock absorbent materials around the swing set area. Some of these materials include sand, wood chips, and mulch.

Place a swing set for generations

Once you have prepared your yard and begin looking for the right swing set make sure that you choose a style that is age appropriate. Many parents make the mistake of purchasing swing sets that are too advanced for their children and this can lead to injuries. You should also ensure that the swings are a good distance apart from each other, to prevent children from bumping into each other while swinging. There should never be more than two swings installed per section.

Additionally, you should regularly check the hardware on your selected swing set to ensure that everything is properly secured. Children can put a lot of wear and tear on a swing set, causing nuts and bolts to loosen. By regularly checking and tightening hardware you can help prevent accidents from occurring. Always check for damaged, corrosion, or decay on swing sets to make sure they are in proper working order.

Swing sets that remain outdoors should be treated to withstand weather conditions. Wooden swing sets should be pretreated to keep them safe from water damage. Some areas may require you to have a building permit for the swing set as well, so be sure to check with your local zoning laws as well.

While trampolines are fantastic tools for getting your kids – or yourself – outdoors and active, often parents and potential trampoline users forget to consider the serious health and safety concerns that go along with trampoline use. Used improperly, trampolines can cause serious and irreparable injuries, ranging from sprained or cracked ankles and wrists, to skull fractures, to the worst of all: broken backs or necks.

The list of potential injuries may sound discouraging, but the idea is that if you use a trampoline properly, you won’t need to worry about these kinds of tragic accidents. To avoid these injuries, here are a few things you should avoid doing – and make sure your children don’t do – while on a trampoline:

NEVER allow more than one person on the trampoline at once. Allowing multiple users on a trampoline can result in serious collisions or falls.

NEVER attempt stunts or somersaults while on the trampoline. As fun as it may be to try and imitate Olympic gymnasts, the difference is that they’re trained athletes in a supervised facility. Stunts and somersaults are advanced moves, and landing wrong may result in a broken neck and possible paralysis.

NEVER jump off the trampoline and onto the ground.Stop jumping, and carefully make your way to the edge of the trampoline to get down. Unless, of course, you were hoping for a broken ankle.

DO remove all loose jewelry, hats, or articles of clothing that might catch in the trampoline springs. If one of these items falls off while jumping, there is also the potential for slipping on it, which may cause injury.

DO set up your trampoline on a level, clear area with soft ground. There should be at least 2 meters clearance on all sides of the trampoline, free of things like toys, trees, or laundry lines. Never place the trampoline on a hard surface like concrete, just in case.

DO make sure your trampoline model has shock-absorbing safety pads around the outside edge to cover the hooks, springs and frame. The safety pads must be a different color from the trampoline bed, so that users can clearly distinguish the edge of the trampoline while jumping.

The first thing you should do before ever stepping onto the trampoline, or allowing anyone else to do so, is to take a walk around the unit and inspect the trampoline for rips, tears, or potential obstructions. While this may seem redundant to do each time, even one small tear could result in a devastating injury. For your own protection and the safety of your family, these few simple precautions can ensure that you and your family have a fun, safe, and enjoyable trampoline experience for years to come!Similar Posts:

Kids love playing outside in the garden and there is a wide selection of outdoor toys available for kids to play on. You should think carefully before choosing a suitable outdoor toy for your children. How much space do you have in your garden? Some larger toys if not used all the time can take up space particularly if you have a small garden or lack of storage. How old are your children? Bear in mind that some toys are suitable for older children and may be dangerous if you have little ones. How much wear and tear do you think the toy can take? Children tend to be much rougher with their toys outdoors so make sure that the toy can handle it. Here are five of the most popular outdoor toys.

Climbing Frame: These come in a variety of sizes and some have added swings or slides. You can purchase a toddlers size activity gym that comes with a slide and crawl through tubes or there are frames with platforms, nets and bridges for the more adventurous older children.

Bicycles are a very popular form of outdoor play and are suitable from a young age to adulthood. You can purchase tricycles and push bikes for toddlers. School age children can ride bikes although they may require stabilizers. Older children may be interested in mountain bikes. Always ensure that they are wearing a helmet for their safety.

Scooters have become very popular just recently amongst children. Again you can buy smaller sized scooters for younger children and older ones can buy versions with flashing wheels and stylish colours. Again focus on safety and ensure that your children are playing in a safe area.

Trampoline: Pre-school trampolines can help young children learn and develop through play. When buying a trampoline for the family you need to think about who will be jumping on it in a couple of years time. You can buy them in a variety of shapes such as rectangular or square; they also take a maximum weight.

Football: The football is probably the all time favorite toy for boys and girls during outdoor play. You can buy accessories to go with footballs such as boots, kit, protective gear and signed balls. Goals with nets are also available. For younger children you can buy soft balls for their protection. Just a standard football, though, can provide a group of kids years of fun.

Back in the day, children were content to play out in the back yard in their sandboxes pushing around little metal trucks or filling little buckets with sand. When they got tired of the sandbox, they would ride their bikes around the neighborhood with their siblings or friends. Older children would pull the younger ones around in the little red wagon.

What a simpler time that was! Now children are clamoring for every new toy they see on the television. When it comes to toys that are used outdoors, they have definitely gotten more expensive than the sandbox or bicycle.

Swing sets have gotten more expensive over the years as well. Rather than just including a couple swings and a slide, many of these sets now have other things that the children don’t even use. More interesting to them are the modern jungle gyms that start at about $150 and go up to several hundred dollars which is comparable to modern swing sets.

Instead of regular bicycles, children are begging for Power Wheels that run on batteries. These are quite expensive and children have to be constantly supervised when they are riding them.

Things that kids love to play on are trampolines. Without the safety net enclosure around them, they run around $200 depending on the size and quality. Personally, I think it would be worth it to pay the extra money for the safety net. One thing for sure is that children never seem to get tired of jumping. They will play on a trampoline for hours and hours.

Roller skates are still very popular with kids of all ages. Some of them can cost you more than a hundred dollars per pair. They come in different styles and colors to please even the most particular child.

There are 3 wheelers that sit close to the ground like the big wheels used to. Remember those? They were for smaller children. The ones they have out today can be used even by teenagers and can run you well over $200 for some styles.

There are tents of all colors and shapes that can be set up in the back yard. They are quite reasonably priced and really cute with different decorations on them.

During the summer, water is the one thing that most children love the best. Pools for the back yard are available in many different sizes, shapes, and colors. Every year, companies come out with new styles of pools that can be blown up and taken down at the end of the season. Pool toys are always very popular and there is no end to the variety.Similar Posts:

If you are a parent of a preschooler, you know that there is nothing better than being able to send him or her outside to play for a while. It’s healthy, it’s fun, and last but not least it gets your child outside for a few hours. But when choosing a toy, you should choose it carefully. It involves a number of factors ‘ how long it will last, how fast the child will get bored of it, and how confident you can be in its safety.

Probably the most popular toy of all is the simple tricycle. Put a preschooler on a tricycle, set firm rules about sidewalks, driveways, and roads, and you will see him pedal for hours. Get a tricycle that is colorful and child-friendly, with a low center of gravity and no exposed gears or mechanical parts.

Sports sets are great ideas for preschoolers, particularly if your yard is the ‘hangout’ of all the neighborhood kids. Consider getting a softball set, with a plastic batting stand, bat, and ball. As long as the equipment is child-friendly, you shouldn’t have too many crying kids.

Of course, no boyhood is complete without some sort of truck set. Walk into a toy store, and you will see all sorts of cartoonish toy trucks and cars. Send a couple of boys into a sandbox with their dump trucks, and you’ll be surprised at how entertained they will be, simply moving the sand from place to place.

If you’ve got a tree in your yard, you can hang a swing. The best part is that you can essentially customize it for the age you are dealing with. You can put a baby in a strap-in swinging seat, or you can put some preschoolers on a tire swing. Just get the rope and the seat, and you’re good to go.

One thing that you may not have considered is to simply buy a book of games. There are hundreds of different games that don’t require any equipment or toys, just the kids. Games of Tag and Capture the Flag last for hours, and leave the kids thoroughly winded.

You will find that kids will almost always find something to entertain themselves. Your goal as a parent should be to encourage healthy outdoor activity to raise a well-rounded child. While video games are fun and challenging, they certainly aren’t meant to be played for 3 hours a day.Similar Posts:

Now there are many definitions of toys. Whether you are talking about toys for small children, teenagers, or adults, the main difference is in how much they cost, the older we are the more expensive toys we buy!

Children are the easiest to please, though. They can make just about anything into a toy. It’s not necessary to spend a fortune. A simple ball and bat, or a flying disc is sometimes worth hours of laughs and healthy exercise. Here are some more ideas.

Sprinklers are timeless. On hot days, nothing beats running through the sunshine over the cool refreshing water coming from a sprinkler. There is a modern beach ball sprinkler that puts a twist on this, too, that you can buy. It looks like a beach ball, but when you turn the water on, it becomes a sprinkler! A big hit!

What about swings? We all remember that from our childhood. Swings are classically fun and entertaining. No growing up experience would be complete without a lot of time spent on the swings. There are many sets available for backyard installation. Make sure you install it properly and maintain it regularly. An un-maintained swing set is a potential safety hazard. That would take away the fun of playtime, now, wouldn’t it?

There are modern sandboxes for the little ones that include play centers in cool colors and also feature an umbrella to keep the tikes from getting sunburn! (Sunscreen is still a good idea, though, whenever necessary.) These play sets also include a small area where a couple gallons of water can be filled in for playing and getting wet without the need for a kiddy pool.

What about climbing frames, jungle gyms, and so on? These types of play sets are fun, but must be considered carefully. Remember that if these systems are too tall for any of your children, you’re risking a fall. To prevent injury, put soft gym mats or other material down underneath the set.

There are also many radio controlled cars and airplanes that can bring hours of enjoyment to your children. You remember those! As children we used to use these toys until the batteries ran out or until they broke! Your kids will, too, and they’ll love every minute of it. Some of the RC racecars are faster than ever before! How about purchasing two of them and let two children, or one child and an adult have a race? The helicopters and airplanes that are radio controlled can fly higher and farther than ever, and can stay in the air longer than before! Definitely worth checking out!

Water guns and other water based toys are a must for summertime fun! Squirt guns aren’t what they used to be. Now there are the pump type rifles with a huge reservoir in the back of the gun. They’re fluorescent in color usually, which keeps the spirit of fun alive (don’t get toy guns that look like real guns—this is not the right impression to leave in a child’s mind!).

Water slides are great, but can be dangerous, so make sure you read and follow any instructions provided with these. Remember: whatever outdoor toys you get for your kids, safety should always be priority #1! Priority #2 is to teach the kids to enjoy whatever they have, not to take things for granted, and to just use their imaginations. Perhaps there is no toy a child can have better than their own imagination!Similar Posts:

Children are not playing outside as much as they did many years ago. Now they are too busy playing video games, watching television, or surfing the internet. Many years ago you could see kids out playing in their front yards or riding their bikes down the street. Now it seems that nothing is available to grab a kid’s attention long enough to keep them outside for very long. The biggest problem with this is that kids are getting more and more obese every day, because they are not getting the exercise that they need. A good way to get your children interested in playing outside is to put a swing set in your backyard when they are young, so they get used to playing outside.

A swing set is a very good way to grab a kid’s attention, because a child can use their imagination to play hundreds of games on one. A swing set also has many different obstacles and activities that allow a kid to get all of the exercise that they need to stay happy and healthy. Before buying and installing a swing set in your backyard you must decide how much money you would like to spend, how much room you have in your backyard, whether you would like to hire a professional installer to install the swing set, and what activities you would like to have included on the swing set.

A swingset can easily cost four to five thousand dollars, but you can also find many swing sets that are very nice for less than one thousand dollars. Most swing sets are modular in design, so you can buy the base unit pretty cheap, but it does not take long to really raise the price of your swing set.

The next important thing to determine before buying a swing set is how much room you have available in your backyard. Not only must the swing set fit into your backyard, but you must also make sure there is enough room around the swing set for children to play without hurting themselves.

Some people have a knack for putting things together, and they will probably not have a problem putting together a swingset. However other people can barely put together a bed frame, so these people need to seek professional help when assembling a swing set. Usually a professional installer will charge anywhere from one hundred to three hundred dollars to assemble a swing set.

Some kids like to play on the swings; some kids like a slide, some parents are worried about having rings or monkey bars. A swing set allows children to play on many different things, but you need to make sure which activities your kids like, and which activities you are comfortable with them doing.Similar Posts:

Video games, the Internet, and television are turning kids into couch potatoes. A recent study was released that said if children were to get just 15 minutes of exercise daily it would greatly impact their overall health. 15 minutes? I was lucky if on weekends and during summer vacation I was allowed in the house more than 15 minutes at a time.

What can parents do to encourage their kids to get up, go outside and play? Why not consider purchasing a trampoline? With proper supervision and a clear understanding of how and when the trampoline can be used, trampolines offer a fun way to get a full-body workout without ever leaving the backyard. The best part is that the kids will be having fun and won’t even know the’re doing something good for their bodies.

It is true that improper use of trampolines can cause injuries, but by following a few simple safety rules, children and adults can have many hours of safe trampoline use while still having a lot of fun. The key to keeping a trampoline safe is to make sure that everyone who uses it understands there are a few simple rules that must be followed. Create a clear and simple set of safety rules for the use of your trampoline that will allow your children and their friends to bounce their way to fitness, have fun, and be safe. We’ve all seen those written rules for using public pools – why not write your own set of trampoline rules? At our house, everyone must read the rules and agree to abide by them prior to getting onto our trampoline.

Here’s the list of safety rules for trampoline usage we maintain at our house.

House Rules for Safe Trampoline Usage

The trampoline shall not be used without adult supervision.

The trampoline may not be moved to another location.

All toys, bikes, and people must remain at least 2.5 meters (about8 feet) from the trampoline when it is in use.

Only one person may use the trampoline at a time.

Always jump in the middle of the trampoline.

No somersaults or flips.

Do not jump exit the trampoline; always climb down.

If the trampoline is wet, it may not be used.

The safety net and padding may not be removed at any time.

All jewelry and hair clips must be removed prior to using the trampoline.

Be sure to post the rules in a public place near the trampoline. You may also wish to include on your rules the penalties if the rules are not followed. Get the children involved and make an art project out of creating your trampoline safety rules poster. Use posterboard, markers, crayons, whatever is available to develop ownership in the rules with your children. After all, it’s a bit hard for a child to say they didn’t know they were prohibited from doing flips on the trampoline when the rule is written in their own handwriting.Similar Posts:
